Students can only be creative when they understand what they’re doing and why.
As a Secondary Music Teacher, you will teach KS3 and KS4 students both practical and theoretical aspects of music. Your role is to develop confidence, structure, and skill progression in students of all abilities.
This is not just about performance — it’s about understanding, discipline, and improvement.
Key responsibilities
Teach Music across KS3 and KS4
Plan lessons that balance practical and theory elements
Support performance, composition, and listening skills
Prepare students for GCSE coursework and assessment
Manage classroom behaviour and movement during practical work
Provide clear and constructive feedback
Build confidence in participation and performance
The classroom environment
Lessons are organised and structured
Students understand expectations before starting
Practical work is focused and purposeful
Behaviour remains controlled even in active sessions
Skills and experience
Experience teaching Music or a strong musical background
Confidence delivering both practical and theory lessons
Strong classroom management
Ability to engage students at different ability levels
Good organisation and lesson planning
What success looks like
Students participate confidently
Lessons feel purposeful rather than chaotic
Progress is visible in both performance and understanding
Students feel supported while improving
QTS is desirable; unqualified teachers are welcome to apply, particularly those with performance or production experience
